Chapter Ten

The four of them awoke together for the fifth day in a row, and Jayden had the brief thought that she could get used to this. She might be too hot with limbs criss-crossing her every which way, but she felt loved, and that was an emotion she didn’t think herself capable of any longer. The warmth in her chest was sentimental, too fluttering for her alpha to handle half the time. As if agreeing with her, the beast in her chest rumbled at her, urging them to get the day started. With a grunt, she pushed upward, ignoring the low groans of protest as she crawled across the bed to get off.

This time, they’d slept in the king’s suite, but she didn’t feel any semblance of embarrassment for using their shower or stepping into the closet in search of a shirt to wear over her naked body. All feelings of unease were chased away the moment they sank their teeth into her neck, covering her father’s mark with one of their own. Ever since, contentment had been a constant companion of hers, clearing her mind just enough to sharpen it for what was to come. With a sigh, Jayden poured a cup of steaming coffee and took her notes out onto the balcony.

It was still early, the sun just peeking over the horizon, and for a suspended moment, Jayden pretended everything had already fallen into place. That there was no murderer to catch or war brewing in the shadows. But the files in her hands were burning to the touch, aching for her to flip them open and scheme once more. It shoved away her contentment with a violence only her alpha could achieve, reminding her she wasn’t meant for complacency. Never had been, and a bonding mark wouldn’t change that.

Rather than open the file, though, she only tugged the crumpled first page out of the front to stare at her rushed handwriting. It was a little shaky from fatigue and desperation, but it was clear and the plan was as solid as she claimed it to be.

Visitation at Margrave Cemetery on. . . May 29th? Double check. Mother will visit, I know she will. Go there and intercept father. He will use it to shuttle her away. He wouldn’t dare leave her here without him.

Surround the cemetery with trusted military personnel only after I arrive alone, trailing mother to Alexius’ grave. Father will appear to the both of us. He cannot resist after knowing I lived through his beating. Move in once the perimeter is secure and apprehend him.

It was a simple plan, but there really wasn’t any other way to go about it. If they let him take her mother and feel a sense of security only to attack at the border, things might go irrevocably wrong. Her mother could be killed in the crossfire, or even her father, and where was the justice in that?

She opened the full file, fingers leafing through pages she’d read
